Justice Varma Impeachment and Operation Sindoor Set Stage for High-Drama Monsoon Session

India’s upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, commencing July 21, is poised to be one of the most contentious in recent times. With national security and judicial accountability both under the spotlight, the political stakes couldn’t be higher.

At the forefront is Operation Sindoor, a major counter-terror effort launched in Jammu & Kashmir. Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Imran Masood, have questioned the government’s silence on the outcome. “We want the government to tell us what was achieved — were the terrorists in Pahalgam eliminated or not?” Masood demanded.

Responding to the rising heat, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju assured the Opposition that the Centre is not averse to discussing Operation Sindoor in Parliament. He stressed that such debates must adhere to established parliamentary conventions, a signal that the government is willing to engage — but within limits.

Adding fuel to the fire is the growing momentum behind an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma. Allegations of unexplained wealth and judicial misconduct have pushed over 100 MPs to sign a formal removal motion — a rare and serious step that underscores the gravity of the matter.

Justice Varma, however, has not remained silent. He has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the impeachment process and raising concerns about bias and procedural violations in the inquiry commission’s report.

This dual spotlight — on military operations and judicial ethics — is unprecedented and may lead to high-decibel confrontations in both Houses. Constitutional experts note that the impeachment of a judge is an elaborate process that requires careful adherence to Article 124(4) of the Constitution. But the political overtones are inescapable.

Behind these flashpoints lies a packed legislative agenda. The government plans to introduce several bills, including revisions to tax structures, reforms in the sports administration framework, and amendments to higher education governance.

With tensions mounting, and opposition unity coalescing around these issues, the Monsoon Session promises not just legislative debate — but also a deep reflection on the country’s democratic institutions. Whether it results in genuine accountability or further polarization remains to be seen.
