Jagdeep Dhankhar Steps Down as Vice President of India
India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from office, stating that the decision was taken in light of his health condition and the necessity to follow medical advice. The announcement, made late last night, has left the nation in surprise, with political leaders across party lines expressing concern and respect for his personal choice.
Dhankhar’s resignation marks an unexpected end to a tenure that, though relatively brief, was noted for its dignity and constitutional propriety. As the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar was known for upholding procedural discipline and encouraging constructive debate in the Upper House of Parliament.
In his resignation message, he noted, “The role of Vice President demands undivided attention and energy. At this point, my health must take precedence, and I believe this decision is in the best interest of the office and the country.”
Political reactions began pouring in shortly after the announcement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude for Dhankhar’s service, calling him “a man of integrity and intellect.” Opposition leaders also wished him a speedy recovery and acknowledged his contributions to Indian polity.
The next steps include the initiation of the Vice Presidential election process, as stipulated under Article 66 of the Indian Constitution. Until then, the responsibilities of the office will be temporarily managed as per established parliamentary protocol.
