Tradition in Motion: Ahmedabad's 148th Rath Yatra Unites Faith and Securityx

Ahmedabad came alive with devotion, colour, and discipline on the morning of June 27, 2025, as the city hosted the 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra, a cherished spiritual and cultural event that draws lakhs of devotees annually. This year’s yatra, beginning from the historic Jamalpur Jagannath Temple, was a celebration of spiritual continuity that merged seamlessly with the state’s modern security infrastructure.

 Grand Beginnings with Ceremonial Grace

The day began early with the traditional Mangala Aarti and the symbolic Pahind Vidhi, a ritual where the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, swept the path ahead of the chariots as a mark of humility and service. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also graced the occasion, offering prayers before the procession set out on its 16–18 km journey through the heart of old Ahmedabad.

The divine trio—Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra—were seated on beautifully decorated raths (chariots), pulled by thousands of devotees, symbolizing the god’s journey to his maternal home in Saraspur.

 Massive Security & Surveillance Measures

Ensuring the safety of over a million participants, the Gujarat Police and state authorities undertook one of their largest security operations in recent memory. The scale of the effort included:

  • Over 24,000 security personnel including SRP, commandos, and women officers.

  • Deployment of 300+ CCTV cameras, 60 drones, and 2,800+ body-worn cameras for real-time surveillance.

  • AI-based crowd monitoring and GPS tracking of each chariot for improved coordination.

  • On-ground support with crane services, ambulances, fire tenders, and health booths stationed throughout the route.

This security framework made Ahmedabad’s Rath Yatra a model for how ancient public events can be secured in the age of AI and smart surveillance.
