PM Modi to Trump: No Room for Mediation, Ceasefire Was Bilateral

In a firm diplomatic exchange, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has categorically rejected any suggestion of third-party mediation in India-Pakistan affairs, making it clear to U.S. President Donald Trump that the 2025 ceasefire agreement with Pakistan was a result of direct military-level communication and not external influence.

The conversation took place on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada, where both leaders touched base on regional and global developments. During the call, Modi informed Trump that the ceasefire, announced in May 2025, came about solely through the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) channels, reaffirming India’s long-standing policy of resolving bilateral matters independently.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later elaborated that India “has never accepted and will never accept” any foreign country’s involvement in its internal or bilateral issues, particularly those related to national security. Misri’s sharp response came in light of repeated suggestions by Trump—both on social media and in press interactions—that the United States had helped broker the ceasefire.

India’s Consistent Stand

India’s position on third-party mediation has been non-negotiable for decades. Even at times of heightened tension, such as the aftermath of the Pulwama attack or the Uri strike, New Delhi has consistently turned down mediation offers from global powers, emphasizing the Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration, both of which endorse bilateral dialogue.

According to sources, the Modi-Trump conversation also included discussions about Operation Sindoor, India’s ongoing anti-terrorism campaign. Modi reportedly told Trump that “terrorism is not a proxy war anymore, but a real war that India is committed to fighting”.
