Wankhede Stadium Immortalizes Cricket Icons: Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar & Sharad Pawar Honoured with Named Stands

In a heartfelt tribute to Indian cricketing legends, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled three newly named stands at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on May 16, 2025. The event, which celebrated the legacy of Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar, and Sharad Pawar, transformed Wankhede into not just a venue for cricket, but a monument to the sport’s heroes.

A Delayed Tribute with Lasting Significance

Originally scheduled for May 13, the ceremony was postponed due to regional geopolitical tensions but eventually took place with grandeur. The stadium was adorned with floral arrangements, banners, and fanfare to mark the special occasion. Each stand was renamed to honour the contributions of these legendary figures who have shaped Indian cricket across generations — from the pitch to the boardroom.

Rohit Sharma Stand – Saluting a Modern-Day Legend

Level 3 of the Divecha Pavilion will now be known as the Rohit Sharma Stand, in recognition of the Mumbai-born cricketer’s stellar career and leadership. Sharma, known for his elegant strokeplay and leadership qualities, has played a pivotal role in India’s cricketing successes, including the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

As a native Mumbaikar who began his cricketing journey in local maidans and rose to become India’s captain across formats, Sharma’s stand is a fitting homage to his deep-rooted connection with the city and its cricketing culture. During the inauguration, his portrait in a Test jersey was prominently displayed, symbolizing his all-format dominance and resilience.

Ajit Wadekar Stand – Remembering a Trailblazing Captain

The Grand Stand Level 4 has been named after Ajit Wadekar, one of India’s most transformative captains. Wadekar, who led India to historic series victories against the West Indies and England in 1971, is credited with redefining India's standing in world cricket.

His cerebral approach to the game and dignified demeanor set the tone for generations of Indian cricketers. Though he passed away in August 2018, Wadekar’s legacy lives on, now immortalized in the very stadium where many Indian cricketing tales have unfolded.

Sharad Pawar Stand – Honoring a Visionary Cricket Administrator

Grand Stand Level 3 has been rechristened as the Sharad Pawar Stand, recognizing the former ICC, BCCI, and MCA chief’s unmatched contribution to cricket administration. Pawar, who served as MCA president from 2001 to 2016, played a crucial role in modernizing cricket infrastructure and promoting the game in Maharashtra and across India.

One of his major legacies includes facilitating the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final at Wankhede — a historic win for India on home soil. His political acumen and sportsmanship helped navigate Indian cricket through complex reforms, and this honour reflects the deep respect the cricketing fraternity holds for him.

MCA Office Lounge Dedicated to Late President Amol Kale

The MCA also remembered Amol Kale, the former president who passed away in 2024. As a token of respect, the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion was renamed the MCA Office Lounge in his memory. Kale’s tenure saw structural reforms and increased emphasis on youth cricket in Mumbai.

A Landmark Moment for Indian Cricket

This event marks a watershed moment for Indian cricket, as Wankhede — a stadium already steeped in cricketing lore — now stands as a living museum of excellence and service. The renaming of the stands not only celebrates individual achievements but also inspires future generations to embrace the game with passion and purpose.

With this move, the MCA has reaffirmed Wankhede’s position not just as a cricketing venue, but as a historical institution reflecting the values, victories, and vision of Indian cricket.
