Farewell to a Legend: Tamil Actor Rajesh Passes Away at 75
Veteran Tamil actor Rajesh, a distinguished presence in South Indian cinema, passed away on May 29, 2025, at the age of 75. The acclaimed actor, known for his versatile roles and powerful performances, succumbed to health complications after complaining of low blood pressure and breathing difficulties. He reportedly passed away en route to a hospital in Chennai.
Rajesh was a stalwart of Tamil cinema, having acted in over 150 films across Tamil, Malayalam, and a few Telugu projects. He made his memorable debut in the 1974 film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai, directed by the legendary K. Balachander. His natural acting style and deep voice quickly won him accolades and a devoted fanbase. Over the decades, Rajesh carved a niche for himself with character roles that resonated with audiences across generations.
He played pivotal roles in classics such as Thanneer Thanneer, Andha 7 Naatkal, Payanangal Mudivathillai, and Kanni Paruvathile, the latter marking his debut as a lead actor. His filmography is notable not just for its volume, but for the quality and range of characters he portrayed—whether as a stoic family man, a conflicted lover, or a stern father figure.
Beyond cinema, Rajesh was also active in television and voice acting. He brought life to various serials like Alaigal, Roja, Poove Unakkaga, and Kana Kaanum Kaalangal. Between 2001 and 2016, he worked as a dubbing artist, lending his distinctive voice to support the Tamil industry in multiple capacities.
Rajesh is survived by his son and daughter. His wife, Joan Sylvia Vanathirayar, a writer and educationalist, passed away in 2012. His mortal remains have been brought to his residence in Ramapuram, Chennai. Funeral arrangements are expected to be made after his daughter returns from the United States.
Superstar Rajinikanth, who shared a close friendship with Rajesh, expressed his deep sorrow over the sudden loss. “He was a wonderful human being and a dear friend. I am deeply saddened,” tweeted the actor. Actress Radhika Sarathkumar also shared heartfelt condolences, praising Rajesh’s intellect and wide knowledge of cinema and life.
The Tamil film industry has lost a towering figure, and fans are mourning the end of an era. Rajesh's contributions to Indian cinema will be remembered for generations.
