India Enforces Diplomatic and Strategic Measures Against Pakistan Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

 In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, the Indian government has announced a series of stringent measures aimed at holding Pakistan accountable for its alleged support of cross-border terrorism.

Following a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri outlined five significant steps:​

  1. Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty: India has suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, demanding that Pakistan cease its support for terrorism.​

  2. Closure of the Attari-Wagah Border Checkpost: The Attari Integrated Checkpost, a key transit point between India and Pakistan, has been closed. Pakistani nationals currently in India with valid endorsements are permitted to return through this route before May 1.​

  3. Revocation of Visas for Pakistani Nationals: India has canceled all Specific Purpose Work Visas (SPES) issued to Pakistani nationals. Those currently in India under such visas have been given 48 hours to leave the country. Additionally, Pakistani nationals will no longer be allowed to travel to India under the SAARC visa exemption scheme.​

  4. Expulsion of Pakistani Military Advisors: Defense, military, naval, and air advisors at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared persona non grata and are required to leave India within a week.​

  5. Reduction of Diplomatic Staff: India will withdraw its own defense, navy, and air advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad. Both nations will reduce their High Commission staff strength from 55 to 30 by May 1.​

The CCS condemned the attack in the strongest terms, expressing deep condolences to the victims' families and emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism. The government has pledged to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to justice, reaffirming its commitment to national security and the safety of its citizens.

These measures signify a significant escalation in India's stance against Pakistan, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the government's resolve to combat terrorism emanating from across the border.​
