India Delivers 442 Metric Tonnes of Food Aid to Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

India has extended a significant humanitarian gesture to Myanmar by delivering 442 metric tonnes of food aid as part of its ongoing Operation Brahma. This relief effort follows the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, resulting in over 3,100 fatalities and widespread destruction.

Operation Brahma: India’s Humanitarian Effort

In response to the catastrophe, India swiftly launched Operation Brahma to provide critical assistance, including Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical support. Within 24 hours of the earthquake, India delivered the first tranche of Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials to Myanmar.

On April 6, a naval ship carrying 442 metric tonnes of essential food supplies arrived at Thilawa Port, located about 400 kilometers south of the quake’s epicenter. The consignment was officially handed over to Yangon Region's Chief Minister U Soe Thein by India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur.

The relief package included:

  • 405 metric tonnes of rice

  • 30 metric tonnes of cooking oil

  • 5 metric tonnes of biscuits

  • 2 metric tonnes of instant noodles

These supplies aim to meet the immediate food needs of the affected population in Myanmar, helping thousands of displaced individuals cope with the crisis.

India’s Commitment to Regional Support

The Indian Embassy in Yangon shared details of the aid operation on social media platform X, stating:

“Meeting the needs of affected people. A large 442 T consignment of food aid (rice, cooking oil, noodles & biscuits) carried by @indiannavy landing ship tank INS Gharial arrived today at Thilawa Port & was handed over by @AmbAbhayThakur to CM Yangon U Soe Thein & team. #OperationBrahma.”

The relief materials were dispatched from Visakhapatnam on April 1 aboard INS Gharial, underscoring India’s quick response and commitment to humanitarian assistance.

Quad Nations Pledge Support

Beyond India's efforts, the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) countries—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—have collectively pledged over USD 20 million in humanitarian assistance for Myanmar. This includes relief supplies, emergency medical teams, and long-term support measures for those affected by the disaster.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

India’s rapid response to Myanmar’s crisis further reinforces the strong historical and diplomatic ties between the two nations. As Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, India’s aid stands as a testament to its commitment to regional stability and humanitarian support.

With Operation Brahma in full force, India continues to play a vital role in alleviating the suffering of those impacted by the disaster, showcasing its readiness to extend a helping hand to its neighbors in times of need.
