Himachal Pradesh Adopts Zero-Tolerance Policy Against Drugs: CM Sukhu
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a stringent zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse in the state. Addressing the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Thursday, the CM stated that strict action will be taken within a month against any government officials and employees found involved in drug smuggling.
Strict Action Against Drug Smuggling Nexus
CM Sukhu emphasized that the state government is committed to breaking the nexus between officials and drug suppliers. He warned that employees who provide secret information to drug smugglers would also face strict legal consequences.
Speaking in response to a resolution brought by Congress MLA Kewal Singh Pathania regarding the elimination of drugs and the formulation of a permanent policy, the CM reiterated the government's serious commitment to combating the rising drug abuse issue.
Legislative Measures and De-addiction Initiatives
The government introduced two bills in the Assembly on Wednesday aimed at eradicating drug abuse from the state. CM Sukhu further announced the establishment of a large-scale drug de-addiction center in Kotla near Solan, covering an area of 150 bighas, with an initial budget allocation of ₹5 crore. The construction of the center is expected to commence this year.
Additionally, a comprehensive mapping initiative is being undertaken in all 3,605 panchayats of the state to identify drug users and trace the sources of narcotics such as chitta (a form of heroin). CM Sukhu has issued strict instructions to all SPs to disregard any interference from officers or politicians regarding drug-related matters.
Amendments in Mining Policy
Apart from the drug policy, CM Sukhu also addressed the issue of mining regulations. Responding to BJP MLA Janak Raj’s concerns about land leasing without auction, the CM assured that necessary amendments would be made to the mining policy. The government aims to increase revenue from mining activities from ₹400 crore to ₹1000 crore.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the state’s commitment to protecting its natural resources, stating that any past discrepancies in mining allocations would be rectified to ensure that the state's wealth is not misused.
International-Level Convention Centre in Dharamshala
In another major development, CM Sukhu announced plans for an international-level convention centre in Tapovan, Dharamshala. The government has identified 4.50 hectares of land for this ambitious project, aiming to make it one of the largest convention centers in the country. Earlier, there was a proposal to build the convention centre at Dadi Maidan, but the current government has decided to shift the location.
The Himachal Pradesh government’s firm stance against drug abuse and its commitment to infrastructure development reflect a proactive governance approach. The implementation of a zero-tolerance policy on drug smuggling, the establishment of a de-addiction center, and amendments to the mining policy are significant steps towards the state's progress. With these measures, the government aims to ensure a safer, more prosperous Himachal Pradesh for its citizens.
