From Darkness to Powerhouse: India’s Journey to Becoming an Energy Exporter under PM Modi

 On April 14, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering in Yamunanagar, Haryana, spotlighting India’s transformative journey in the energy sector. In a bold comparison, he recalled the frequent power blackouts under earlier Congress-led regimes and contrasted them with the nation’s current status as a power exporter. Over the past decade, India has not only doubled its power production but also achieved a level of energy surplus that enables it to supply electricity beyond its borders.

A Major Leap in Thermal Power

At the heart of this progress lies continued investment in modern energy infrastructure. Marking a milestone in this journey, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for a new 800-MW ultra-critical thermal power unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamunanagar. Spread over 233 acres and backed by a massive investment of approximately ₹8,470 crore, this project is set to be completed by March 2029. Once operational, it is expected to boost Haryana’s energy self-sufficiency and ensure uninterrupted power for households and industries across the state.

Clean Energy from Waste: Gobardhan Initiative Expands

Reinforcing the government’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy, PM Modi also launched the construction of a compressed biogas plant in Mukarabpur under the ‘Gobardhan’ scheme. This facility, with a production capacity of 2,600 metric tonnes per year, will transform organic waste into clean fuel. Scheduled for completion by 2027, it not only contributes to waste management but also promotes rural bio-economy and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

Infrastructure for Growth: Rewari Bypass Inaugurated

In a move aimed at bolstering connectivity and economic development, the Prime Minister digitally inaugurated the 14.4-kilometre Rewari Bypass project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. With an estimated cost of ₹1,070 crore, the bypass is set to decongest Rewari city significantly and cut down travel time between Delhi and Narnaul by nearly an hour. This strategic infrastructure project is expected to improve logistics and drive regional economic growth.
