India and UAE Strengthen Diplomatic and Economic Ties

India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continue to bolster their long-standing partnership through strategic diplomatic engagements and economic cooperation. In a significant meeting, Pratik Mathur, India’s Consul General in Shanghai, met with his UAE counterpart, H.E. Muhammad Alnaqbi, to explore new avenues for enhancing bilateral relations.

High-Level Engagements and Strategic Cooperation

India and the UAE have maintained a dynamic diplomatic relationship, with frequent high-level meetings to strengthen collaboration across various sectors. In December 2024, the two nations held the 4th Strategic Dialogue and the 15th Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi, led by India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. These discussions focused on expanding cooperation in defense, advanced technologies, nuclear energy, and renewable power.

A notable milestone from these engagements was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Emirates Polar Mission Steering Committee and India’s National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research. This agreement is expected to enhance joint research efforts in polar exploration and scientific studies, furthering collaboration in environmental and climate research.

Economic Cooperation and Trade Expansion

Economic cooperation remains a key pillar of India-UAE relations. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which came into effect on May 1, 2022, has significantly boosted non-oil trade between the two countries. The agreement aims to elevate bilateral trade to $100 billion by reducing tariffs on over 80% of traded goods, improving market access, and streamlining business processes.

Additionally, in July 2023, India and the UAE introduced a local currency settlement mechanism, enabling transactions in Indian Rupees and UAE Dirhams. This strategic initiative reduces dependency on the US dollar, enhances trade efficiency, and strengthens financial collaboration.

Strengthening Future Partnerships

The recent discussions between Consul Generals Mathur and Alnaqbi reflect the commitment of both nations to further strengthen their diplomatic, strategic, and economic ties. With ongoing initiatives in trade, technology, defense, and energy, India and the UAE are poised to deepen their cooperation, fostering mutual growth and regional stability.

As both countries continue to build on their historic and evolving partnership, these diplomatic engagements reaffirm their shared vision for a stronger, more interconnected future.
