US Flight Carrying 3rd Batch of Indian Deportees Lands in Amritsar

The third batch of Indian deportees from the United States arrived at Shri Guru Ram Dass International Airport in Amritsar on Sunday. The flight carried approximately 112 deportees, with the highest number hailing from Haryana.

Recurring Deportation Flights

This arrival comes just a day after another US military aircraft landed in Amritsar, carrying 117 illegal Indian immigrants. The C-17 aircraft touched down at the airport around 11:35 pm on Saturday. Among these 117 deportees, 65 were from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, eight from Gujarat, three from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Maharashtra and Rajasthan, and one each from Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Claims of Mistreatment

Three deportees onboard the latest flight claimed they were handcuffed and their legs were chained throughout the journey. This has raised concerns regarding the treatment of deportees by US authorities.

Arrests Upon Arrival

Among those deported, two individuals from Rajpura in Patiala district, Sandeep Singh alias Sunny and Pradeep Singh, were arrested upon landing in Amritsar. They were wanted in connection with a murder case registered in Rajpura in 2023.

First Batch and the Handcuff Controversy

The first batch of Indian deportees had arrived in Amritsar on February 5, with 104 Indian nationals on board. Many deportees from that flight also alleged that they were shackled throughout their journey and were only unshackled upon landing. These claims led to a nationwide controversy, with opposition leaders demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the issue during his visit to Washington.

Diplomatic Response

Following widespread outrage, the Indian government officially conveyed its concerns to the US regarding the treatment of deported Indian nationals. The incident continues to be a topic of diplomatic discussion between both nations.
