PM Modi Likely To Meet Elon Musk, Starlink's India Entry To Be Discussed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet tech entrepreneur Elon Musk during his visit to the United States. The meeting is anticipated to focus on Starlink’s entry into the Indian market, as reported by Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter.



Starlink’s India Plans

Musk is likely to discuss Starlink’s satellite broadband service expansion into India with PM Modi and Indian government officials. The discussions may include regulatory approvals, spectrum allocation, and potential operational challenges faced by Starlink in India.

The Indian government has previously shown support for Musk’s proposal that spectrum should be assigned rather than auctioned. However, Starlink’s license application remains under review, which makes this discussion a crucial step toward its eventual rollout in India.

Government’s Stance and Security Considerations

According to sources, the Indian government has expressed concerns over security and data storage. Reports suggest that Musk is willing to provide assurances regarding data security, including storing data locally within India.

In December 2024, Starlink faced regulatory hurdles in India after authorities seized two of its devices—one from an armed conflict zone and another from a drug smuggling operation. These incidents have made regulatory compliance a key area of focus in any potential agreement between Starlink and India.

Tesla’s Potential India Expansion

While the focus of the meeting is expected to be Starlink, it is unclear whether Tesla’s entry into India will also be on the agenda. However, reports indicate that increased sourcing of electric vehicle components from India could be discussed, further strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Modi’s US Visit and Bilateral Relations

PM Modi’s visit to the US follows his three-day trip to France. During his visit, he is also scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump. This marks Modi’s first visit to the US since Trump’s second-term inauguration.

Modi expressed his eagerness for the visit, stating, "Although this will be our first meeting following his historic electoral victory and inauguration in January, I have a very warm recollection of working together in his first term in building a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the US."

He further emphasized that the visit will help build upon previous collaborations and deepen partnerships in areas such as technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience.

With Starlink’s India entry at a critical juncture, the outcome of Modi’s meeting with Musk could shape the future of satellite broadband connectivity in India. If approved, Starlink’s operations could revolutionize rural internet access and significantly boost India’s digital economy.
